7 Tips to priceless, professional video memories

  1. Realize early on in your event planning that you cannot possibly see it all, enjoy it all, or remember it all. The day will fly by and you won't be able to "soak it" all in at the time. Having determined in your mind that you need video as much as you need photography, add the line item to your budget early on in your event planning. There is no greater price than the cost of regret!

  2. Look for video professionals with academic training, industry experience, and who are members of professional video associations. And be sure that you like the video company, feel comfortable with them, and are CONFIDENT in their work, their people skills, and their contingency plans.

  3. View full length videos- not just demo clips to determine equipment quality, artistic style and shooting/ editing techniques. Ask to see recent samples (preferably only a few months old) and be sure that you fully understand what your final production will look like, and how much editorial control you'll have.

  4. Look for a state-licensed video business that carries liability insurance. Also be sure that the companies you are considering are fully licensed in their local cities or counties.

  5. Ask for professional, broadcast-quality equipment that is well maintained. Also ask if back-up equipment is used. The equipment could be outdated, or of consumer, not professional quality. Remember, you get what you pay for, and in life, you usually pay now, or pay later.

  6. Budget approximately the same for video services as for photography. You wouldn't hire your uncle with his point and shoot to take all of your precious photos, so why would you trust him to videotape the event? You can't go back and do everything over again, so plan wisely, and have it done professionally and artistically. It could possibly be the best investment you make for your special event!

  7. Ask other industry professionals, wedding vendors and former brides for referrals. Find out if the company paid to be on a referral list, or are they being referred because they are known for giving quality products and services? Many companies pay for referral listing. Unfortunately, this type of referral may not reflect the confidence and competence you are looking for in a video company.
